Wikipedia notability for Singapore executives: what qualifies

Wikipedia notability isn't about achievement — it's about independent, in-depth coverage a person doesn't control. Most executives don't meet it, and that's fine.

Wikipedia notability gets requested the way a logo redesign gets requested — as a deliverable an agency should be able to produce. It doesn't work like that, and understanding the actual standard saves a specific kind of wasted effort.

What notability actually means

Wikipedia's general notability guideline requires significant coverage in multiple, independent, reliable sources — coverage the subject didn't create, commission or control. A profile in a company's own press materials doesn't count. A press release republished by outlets doesn't count. Genuine, substantive journalism from outlets with editorial independence, covering the person specifically rather than mentioning them in passing, is what the standard actually requires.

Why most executives don't qualify, and why that's not a failure

Running a substantial, even prominent, company doesn't automatically generate the kind of independent in-depth coverage the standard requires. Many CEOs of genuinely large organisations don't have Wikipedia articles, and attempting to force one where the underlying coverage doesn't exist tends to fail publicly — draft articles get rejected, and existing ones get flagged for deletion, which itself becomes a visible, searchable record.

A rejected or deleted Wikipedia draft is a worse search result than no Wikipedia presence at all.

What a legitimate path looks like

Coverage comes first, an article second. Genuine, sustained press coverage — the kind covered in our note on getting cited by third-party media — is the prerequisite, not something to build around an article after the fact.

Disclosure if involved at all. Wikipedia's conflict-of-interest guidelines require anyone connected to the subject to disclose that connection rather than edit directly. An experienced, disclosed editor working from genuinely independent sources has a real chance; an undisclosed paid edit gets detected and reversed at a high rate, and detection itself creates a negative record.

Accepting "not yet" as the honest answer. For most executives, the accurate assessment is that notability doesn't yet exist, and the actual next step is building genuine press coverage over time rather than attempting to shortcut the article itself.

Correcting an existing article

Where an article already exists and contains errors, the correct process is proposing changes on the talk page with reliable sources, not editing directly from an account connected to the subject. This is slower but far more durable — edits that survive scrutiny rather than getting reverted as a conflict-of-interest violation.

Common questions

Straight answers

Can I write or commission my own Wikipedia article?

Technically possible but strongly discouraged — Wikipedia's conflict-of-interest guidelines require disclosure, self-written articles face heavy scrutiny, and paid undisclosed editing is against the platform's terms and gets detected and removed more often than it succeeds.

Does being a CEO automatically qualify someone for a Wikipedia article?

No. Notability is about the depth and independence of coverage received, not the seniority of the role. Many CEOs of substantial companies don't have and don't qualify for a standalone article.

What if an article exists but has significant errors?

Corrections should go through Wikipedia's talk page process with reliable sources cited, not a direct edit from an account connected to the subject — direct edits from an interested party are exactly what triggers scrutiny and reversion.
