What happens to old coverage after the matter is resolved

Resolution doesn't automatically update the record. Getting the correction to actually rank requires separate, deliberate work.

A dispute settles, a complaint is withdrawn, an investigation closes without findings — and the coverage from when it was live news stays exactly where it was, still ranking, still the first thing anyone researching the matter finds.

Why resolution doesn't update the record automatically

Publishers report news as it happens. A story about an active investigation is accurate at the time it's written, and there's no automatic process requiring the publisher to revisit it once the matter concludes — particularly if the resolution itself wasn't newsworthy enough to generate independent coverage, which is common, since "investigation closes with no findings" rarely gets the same attention as the original allegation.

The asymmetry is structural: allegations are news, resolutions usually aren't — which means the record defaults to the version that was true at the most dramatic moment, not the version that's true now.

What actually works

Request an update to the original article, not a new one elsewhere. A correction or update note added directly to the original piece inherits that article's existing search ranking and authority — far more effective than new content published elsewhere trying to outrank it independently. Most reputable publishers have a process for this and will act on clear, documented evidence of the resolution.

Provide the evidence, not just the request. A specific, documented resolution — a court order, a formal closure letter, a settlement confirmation appropriate to share — moves faster than a general request to "update the story," which gives an editor nothing concrete to act on.

Where the publisher won't update, build the accurate current record elsewhere. This is displacement rather than correction — building genuine, authoritative content reflecting the current, accurate picture, sustained enough to compete with the original story's ranking over time.

What doesn't work

Demand letters as a first move against an established publisher rarely succeed and sometimes generate a second story about the demand itself. Disputing the original article's accuracy at the time it was published — when it may well have been accurate then — is a weaker position than simply presenting what's changed since.

The realistic timeline

A publisher update, once secured, typically shows measurable ranking movement within weeks, since it's modifying an already-authoritative page rather than building new authority from nothing. Displacement without a publisher update, covered in more depth in our reputation repair guide, runs on the slower sixty-to-ninety-day (or longer) timeline that applies to entrenched results generally.

Common questions

Straight answers

If a case is dismissed, does the original news coverage get removed?

Rarely automatically. The original article typically stays published — removal isn't standard practice for accurate reporting at the time it was written, even where later events changed the picture.

Can I ask a publisher to update their original article?

Yes, and this is often the single most effective step — many publishers will add an editor's note or update with the resolution when presented with clear evidence, which is far more credible than content published elsewhere disputing the original story.

How long does it take for an update to actually outrank the original story?

Varies, but a genuine update from the original publisher — on the same article, same domain — ranks faster and more durably than new content elsewhere, since it inherits the original article's existing search authority.
